Does anyone have recommendations for web hosting providers, ideally somewhat local (i.e., takes CDN$)? Memento-mori.ca expired at 12:17 am this morning because my hosting provider didn't renew it. They've done this before. I'm not going to cancel my service with them right now, because it would be too much of a PITA for the people who are using memento-mori's webmail service. I sent in a ticket to the provider (Stormweb.ca) at 7am, and by 10:30am, still no repsonse from them. I'm not going to renew with them when the domain comes up for renewal next year; I am sick of this crap. So, I will be needing a new hosting company for memento-mori in about a year.
This fuckup on thier part means that it is possible that people using memento-mori.ca for e-mail may be bouncing messages; the domain name doesn't resolve right now, so none of us can recieve e-mail.
ETA: At 10:33 they finally invoiced me for the renewal. No communication about the delay, or thier fuckup, nor even anything yet which suggests that they ahve actually renewed the domain; no notice from CIRA, test e-mails still bouncing, etc. I am very unhappy with them.
ETAA: At 10:56, I figured out the source of confusion; at some point, they spun off a child company to handle their domain registration, and didn't tell me I had an account with this new company, and that renewals should/could be done through them. I now have the knowledge needed to prevent this from happening next year, but I have yet to recieve any clear communication from them to tell me this. Asshats.

I can speak to the quality of their customer support, though. At one point, we were having trouble with our interweb connection, and called their helpline. I didn't have to go through any automated systems, and was immediately connected to a guy on his cellphone, at 7pm on a Sunday night. He talked me through some troubleshooting while his family was having dinner in the background. Awesome!
Also, at one point, Bell was a jerk and shut off our ADSL for several days (long story - the previous tenant hadn't cancelled, we got a new service installed, Bell noticed that the previous line wasn't being paid for, so shut down both of them). Once the problem was determined to be not my fault and not Sentex's fault, they opened the tickets with Bell and did all the liasing with them (a huge plus in my books). When everything was fixed, they called to let us know that they'd be crediting us for the time our net was down, without any prompting from us.

Not sure if it helps at all, but I did receive an email from Liz this morning that said it came from momento-mori.ca. Of course, when I tried to respond my reply bounced, so I had to send it via her LJ email.

I really hope they fix this soon!

(man, I love being paid in CDN$ right about now!)

how much space/bandwidth are you looking for and how much do you want to pay for it?

So, assuming that the Canadian dollar doesn't suddenly plummet, you'll gain from using a US company so long as you don't commit to a very long (5-10 year) term.
The Free Trade Agreement has so rarely panned out well for Canadians -- wreak some economic revenge!

i use domainsatcost.ca . they are cheap and have been fine so far. I use 1and1.com for .coms. i host my own stuff on a virtual machine, and i run my dad's office on a VM at quantact.com . they are cheap and give you root access and dedicated specs, which is nice.

One of my other domains (the one that point to the box in the corner of my spare bedroom at home) expired a couple days ago, and I went and quickly and cheaply renewed it, and had a confirmation from CIRA in < 5 minutes. I'm defintiely going to keep control of the domain name myself from now on.
