Leather?

How does one go about cleaning leather? I have a few leather items (bracers, a collar, etc.) that I have worn dancing a few times. Which means that I've sweat in them, a lot, to the point where they're salt-stained and, in one case, kind of smelly from the retained sweat. Are they salvagable?

Saddle soap is your friend. Rub it on with a very small amount of water, let it sit a moment rub it off with a barely damp cloth, let the leather dry, check it, repeat if nessicary.

So yes probably salvageable, might want to consider mink oiling them, might not, that depends more on the piece.

Any leather supply or replay replace should have something suitable! Northbound comes to mind although they have a different line then Saddle Soap. Nothing like an excuse to go shopping! :-)

Home hardware was always my preffered place, shoe shops, corner stores, I don't know it's just always about when I need it. Unlike so many other things in life.

Also any of those little shoe repair places should have stuff for cleaning leather. Saddle soap is definitely a good call -- saddles get pretty damn dirty.

you know what...I really need to get my mind outta the gutter. I went to a very non-horse oriented place when you said that..

I think I need saddle-soap for the brain...

if you're going to be in KW this weekend, the place to get it is any TSC store (they'll also have leather conditioner and oils like mink or neatsfoot to help keep leather items supple). there's one on weber street across from the St Jacob's farmer's market, and another at the very south end of kithener just of the 401 near my place (tucked in behind the gas station/tim horton's/macdonald's complex on the west side of homer watson at the first set of lights).

i'm not sure if i have any soap on hand at the house, but i'll check. i know we oiled matthew's leather duster when i bought it for him, but i don't think we cleaned it.

if you don't get any this weekend, let me know and i'll pick some up for you and TCS (Tribe Courier Service) it to you at CHEESE.

Just an FYI for both of you, I HAVE saddle soap that I'm happy to part with. TCS delivery needed?

if you'll be at Bards on friday, you can hand it to him directly :) (or hand it to reb when you're there this weekend (and i can get it from him when he's done and return it to you, or keep it on hand if you mean "part with" in a permanent, please-don't-make-me-move-it sense ;-)

After heaving sweating, you might consider wiping it down wih a barely-damp cloth just to prevent salt stains.

Also! You already wanted riding boots, why not just hit up an actual tack shop and get a look see at boots and prices and things? (:

Check against Nick's Shoe Repair on Dundas, they do riding boots and custom foot ware at pretty amazing prices. It's not a name that inspires much but it's been there I think since God made little green apples as the saying goes.

And by Dundas I ment Dupont, nearish Spadina.
