I think that this is more of a move because of new TV formats that can be ordered with pause/rewind/fast-forward features -- you've probably seen the commercials for these on TV, since I hardly ever watch any, and I've seen the commercials.
Clearly, TV viewers could easily skip the commercials, with little or no effort on the new systems, which makes advertisers not want to pay big bucks to put on their commercials.
Since most TV is paid for by the advertising, they need to come up with alternatives for ads, or charge a lot more money ... it sucks, but that's the way it goes.
On a more positive advertising note, though, this would seem to indicate that those damned "You're Today's Winner!" windows will stop popping up on your computer screens.
