George W Bush has revitalized dystopian science fiction; before GWB got elected, specfic about a future with a massive, all-powerful government was beginning to seem silly, since the government was losing so much ground to corporations, in terms of scary abuses of power. Now, though, with the way GWB has been running the US, the world is safe for writers speculating on the government doing horrible things again. As a bonus, corporations world-wide are still scary enough to keep the beleivability in Snow Crash and Jennifer Government.

There's just so many things to be afraid of!

People who thought there was no danger of a massive, all powerful government have obviously never even bothered to look at the EU - where it's illegal to sell a banana with improper curvature (http://www.quebecoislibre.org/020119-6.htm). Or speak freely.
