Good/Bad:

Good: Shipment from ThinkGeek; I now have a samurai umbrella, 3 monitor mounted mirrors for work, a coffe cup power inverter that gives me 1 usb power socket and 2 standard power plugs for the car, two power squids, and laser scissors.

Bad: My lungs hate me today.

Good: Managed three good solid workouts this week. In bodycombat, the instructor took my request and worked one of my favourite song/exercise combos in. Also, next time the schedule shifts, she's also taking my suggestion to have a thursday night class, which a) works perfectly with my schedule, and b) means it'll be a full hour class instead of the truncated 45 minute classes we have at lunch.

Bad: Due to excessive caffeine, my guts also hate me today. (The caffeine usually helps with the lungs).

Good: Contact Dance is coming along well. I think by the end of this course, I might actually feel comfortable enough to try a Jam. Though the timing sucks for me.

Bad: The appartment is reaching terrifying levels of messy. We have a moth infestation, though I think (hope!) that they're the sort that eat our food instead of our clothes.

Good: My Indigo shipment also came in - a book on electronics, Cherie Priest's Boneshaker, and a couple non-fictions on superheroes.

Bad: Still having periodic issues with the jaw. Hopefully the dentist on Tuesday will help.

Good: Cafeteria food this week has included meatloaf wrapped in thick slices of bacon with mashed potato and veggies, and veal saltimbocca (sp? basically veal cutlets with fancy ham on top) with a baked potato and veggies. This is why 52 weeks of music and lunch will be hard - the cafeteria food here is *good*.

Good: Despite the good food, I seem to have lost a little bit of weight.

Bad: Despite having just moved into this cube on Monday, I am moving again March 5th, and probably again two weeks after that. I found out about the second move after I'd unpacked everything. The new cube has two walls instead of the three I am used to.

Good: The number of moves is to ensure that we don't end up in "tripods", where they cut the current cubes to 2/3 of their original size, so you can't back up without smacking into the person behind you (where the third wall ought to be). Move 2 has our current cubes tripodded, while move 3 has us move over a couple desks to cube that will not get the tripod treatment.

Watching White Collar and Chuck is having an odd effect on me. I am having increasing cravings for traditional men's wear - suits, ties, fedoras, vests, etc. I actually pulled out the ironing board this morning and not only ironed my work pants, but my shirt as well. As a consequence, I was an hour late getting to work.

I really must remind myself that I cannot afford to go get myself a couple suits, some tie pins/clips etc. And a pair of button braces. And pants modified to take button braces (I am *done* with clip-on suspenders when wearing a vest.)

I need to hire a wardrobe consultant to shop for me and make clothes for me. Sadly, I seem to have misplaced my production budget.
While in Ktown for the weekend, we stayed with the Lizrents. The Lizrents have a cat. A sweet, pretty, stupid cat with long hair. This means that my allergies start to overwhlem whatever anti-allergen I throw at them after a while. To survive, I bring out the nuclear option - stimulants. Pseudoephedrine and caffeine keep me perky and breathing despite the cat.

The downside is that I don't sleep well with all that in my system.

Sunday, I loaded up with tea and advil cold+sinus to get to "normal". Then we left and headed home. By the time we got there, I was bouncing off the walls. My stomach is also unhappy, whether due to turkey or caffeine (or egg nog) I am not sure.

I only got about 4 hours of sleep last night.

Yule vigil (staying up from sunset to sunrise tonight) is going to be *fun*! I'm hitting caffeine now to make it through the day. I don't want to touch stimulants after sunset, since it feels like cheating. If I start nodding off, though, I may cheat with some absinthe.

When I get sick, I feel fine in the morning, and increasingly crappy a the day goes on.

Blergh.

I should be making soup.

"You're going to make someone a good wife some day!" (from a male executive. my ex-uncle once made the same comment on seeing me cook.)

"Oh, your wife has you really well trained!"

Because washing dishes, cooking, and fashion sense are all "women's work". What century is this again?

( Sep. 28th, 2009 09:59 am)
I knew the soles of the combat boots I bought in March were getting a little worn. I discovered, while walking in a rain storm Saturday, that the heel had pretty much collapsed in on itself. It seems to me that combats should last more than six months - these boots hadn't even met winter yet. Now I must find time to make a trip to a shoe repair place and get new soles put on. There's no budget for a new pairs of combats right now.

Until then, I will be rotating through other boots that I can sell as worksafe. Today, it's the pointy-toed skull buckle boots. They're fairly comfortable, if slow to put on and take off. The heel on these boots approximates the angle of my orthotics, which I can't wear with them.

The pointy-toed boots added to the leather hat and the long black coat today make me feel all Deadwoody. I feel a sudden craving for a big moustache.

I slept poorly last night - went to bed at 11, up again at midnight, back to sleep at 1-2, t hen up again at 5:30 before finally getting out of bed around 6:15.

Today was mildly productive at work.

Meetings ran late enough to put me an hour late getting to the gym, so I decided to go home instead.

On getting home, I decided to clean up a bit, then try to be productive.

While cleaning up, an entire shelf of vinegar, oil and soy sauce bottles collapsed when I bumped it trying to put away recycling. Miraculously, only one mostly empty bottle of balsamic broke. The down side is that the reason the other bottles didn't break is that they bounced off something soft before hitting the ground - namely my head and my right hand.

Clearly this is a sign that I should just microwave some dinner and spend the night curled up in the office doing nothing more complicated than drinking vodka.

So, for last Hallowe'en, I made myself a lab coat. Due to an unexpected work crisis, I ended up having 12 hours less to work on it the weekend of CHEESE than I had planned. I got rushed, and the coat made it through the night, but I took a lot of shortcuts and accepted a lot of shoddy work. Most notably, the sleeves (my first sort of drafted/tailored sleeves) were messed up, since I hadn't gotten the gather right and ended up with the notches cut into the pattern to help it bend sticking out through the seam.

For an upcoming party, I decided to take the excuse opportunity to fix the coat and get it to a more usable state. Part of this was pulling off the sleeves to reattach them. I got them taken off, and figured out the right setting on my sewing machine so that I can do the gather properly.

First problem; when I took the sleeves off, I didn't label them, so I don't know which is which.
Second problem; I figured I could just go to the website where I got the instructions on how to draft the sleeves. It has gone down and the google cache is useless without pics.

I'll figure it out eventually, but man - this stuff never works out to be simple.

I am definitely sick - the fever has started in earnest now, in addition to the constant gut issues. This is definitely what Lizard has. So at least we know it's not an ulcer - yay?

I am amused and annoyed that the biggest issue in getting sick for me is that I don't think I can justify going to the gym tonight.

Art

( May. 27th, 2009 02:56 pm)
The internet is wonderful - it allows artists to create wonderful things and put them where others can enjoy them.

Some days, though, I find it a touch depressing how much more talented other people are when compared to, say, me.

Case in point;

Faux retro novelization of movie covers
and
Faux retro movie posters

I really wish I had the time to invest in becoming that technically proficient, and encouraging my muse enough to become that creative.

I have thinky posts on the boil in my brain.

I have minimal posting/e-mail access at work.

Frustrating.

Now, bed.

p.s., contact dance class continues to rock.

So, it is the first of February. A new beginning!

Thus far, I have;

  • Been woken up by the pager (nothing serious or time consuming)

  • Had no voice when I responded to the page (but some water cleared that up)

  • Had a tub of old soy flour dive for my groin from the top shelf when I opened a cupboard to look for spices, covering my only clean pair of jeans.

  • Had my webhost fall entirely off the net for a while (it came back, and now I am backing up the data files for my wiki)

February, are you fucking with me?

We at Beta Colony have a fever. Things we have discovered that are not effective prescriptions for our fever:

  • More cowbell

  • In fact, any amount of cowbell

  • Battlestar Galactica

  • Going to work

  • Chocolate

  • Neal Stephenson

  • Batman

  • Doing laundry

Today I woke up feeling awful. Unhappy insides, sore throat, no voice and a sinus ick of some kind. I still figured I should go to work, until I heard the traffic and weather reports. And Zil told me to stay home. So, I worked from home today, and was probably more useful than if I had stayed home.

On the down side, I skipped the gym, though I managed to eat fairly sanely. The chest freezer is starting to pay off when I had to toss the first dish of leftovers from the fridge because on closer inspection, the smell was *not* garlic. The freezer thankfully had some older frozen leftovers that were quite edible.

I'm also very glad that [livejournal.com profile] neeuqdrazil stashed home-made ginger syrup in the fridge, right next to the lemon juice.

*looks outside*
I think I picked the wrong night to work late.
*ponders stopping for dinner somewhere near work before driving home*
This is not going to be a fun commute.

PS; actually, the drive wasn't that bad. I was glad that I took a minute in the mostly empty parking lot to remind myself what driving iin snow is like though. Much brake-pumping.

Ow.

( Nov. 18th, 2008 08:08 am)
Back is out. I'm working from home today while I hobble around with a cane - driving seems to make it worse. I'd hoped it would be improved this morning. Not so much. At 9, I am going to call and see if I can get in to see an RMT today. I am trying to avoid taking anything with advil in it because my stomach is pretty upset to begin with.

Voltaire is playing Savage Garden. I love Voltaire! He's never played Toronto before.

That is the night I am seeing Avenue Q with [livejournal.com profile] neeuqdrazil.

I am sad that I will be missing Voltaire.

Point form post!

  • Spent time sewing last night. Made myself a pocket full of fail. The snaps were too loose (apparently they need a reinforcing layer of fabric), and I mounted them too low on the pocket back. And the straps I made, planning to turn them inside out, did not turn inside out. I cut a new pocket back, straps and reinforcing strips, and will take another shot at pouches tonight.

  • When I'm waiting for code to compile, etc., I am geeking out about White Wolf's Scion. Anyone know of a good site for Norse words/phrases?

  • Yesterday, I woke up at 4:30 am with a splitting headache, and couldn't get back to sleep. I woke up at 4:30 again today, but no headache, so I passed out again. My body is trying to recalim the lost sleep from yesterday. Horrible chemistry has been invoked.

  • I also need to remember to go through my sarongs some night this week and see which ones need to have ties added.

  • According to the Weather network, the forecast temperatures for Fest is now NaN C, for the entire 14 days.

  • As further evidence of my neural degredation, I find I am growing to quite like Old Krupnik.

  • I need a vacation.

Dear Business Persons of the GTA,

Please stop adding me on facebook. I know someone told you it was good "guerilla marketing". Because, of course I'll add back some guy I don't know! And then, when I need a real estate agent or an investment advisor, I'll think "Hey! Isn't that guy on my facebook friends list a real estate agent or an investment advisor? I should go give him my business!!!!!eleventy-one!"

You are neither clever nor original, so please go away.
