From a discussion on someone else's LJ on whether or not it is possible to belly dance without cultural appropriation; Appreciation, Appropriation, and Exploitation in Ethnic Dance

I wonder, actually, if the same examination is relevant to the martial arts - most people who study Asian MA these days are several levels of remove from the culture that spawned the art, and that culture is usually echoed in the training.

(Even more tangentially - where does that leave Brazilian Jujitsu; a Brazilian style of a Japanese martial art?)

I have thinky posts on the boil in my brain.

I have minimal posting/e-mail access at work.

Frustrating.

Now, bed.

p.s., contact dance class continues to rock.

Winter camping has been cancelled due to the complete and utter lack of winter - it was decided that spending 3 days in a yurt near Port Elgin when it's 5 C and raining would kind of suck, so it's off.

This does mean, however, that I'm going to drag my ass to Dark Rave Saturday night for as much fun as my semi-broken body can handle.

Since [livejournal.com profile] neeuqdrazil made plans for Friday night on the assumption that I'd be out, I am looking for something to do out of the house. Suggestions?

I went out and had a good time seeing Ayria at Savage Garden last night. I danced until the club closed, then came home. I'm in a good mood today. We shall see if that survives an attempt at putting away all the camping stuff.

The weather is cold and wet today, but that means I can wear my leather pants again for the first time in months.

So I learned something tonight.

One bottle of "Nair for Men" is not enough. Not even enough, really, to do both my legs. Two hours later, I've removed the hair from my legs. Only my legs, thus far. I think I will leave the upper body until tomorrow.

Which influences my choice of clothes for the club tonight - do I want long sleeves and a skirt that shows legs or something? Do I need to lose the beard now instead of later? I know not. But I am tired.

I'm in a much better mood today, in no small part to a couple of exceptionally kind people who put up with me being pouty and sullen yesterday.

It is, I think, time for more good things;

  1. I filled up on gas at 75 cents/litre last night, so this week's gas was roughly $10 cheaper than it's been recently.

  2. I won two free guestlist spots for Ayria on Friday. I need to ping a couple more people to see if anyone wants to go with me.

  3. The wonderful [livejournal.com profile] neeuqdrazil took pity on cranky me, and had dinner, a glass of wine and Veronica Mars waiting for me when I got home.

Still no joy on the sleep front - woke up at 5:30 this morning, 30 min before my alarm, and over an hour before sunrise.

Made it to parties two, three and four. Much fun was had, though I didn't manage to party all the way through until 11am. :)
