Did not get all the ingredients I need to make chili for camping. Could not find camp soap. Too hot to breathe. Giving up, going to go die and sleep now. Tomorrow will be insane.

I'm curious 'bout the chili -- what/how are you making it? MEC will have camp soap fwiw, and many health food stores carry biodegradable multipurpose soaps that'll do. G'luck!

Camping and I are locked in a feud that started when I was a teenager. Nature and I realize that we have to mutually co-exist, but neither of us likes it.

My girl is providing yet another example of her awesomeness and has offered to run down to MEC tonight to get me more camp soap, so I am covered there.

The chili is for carnivores, for I'll be using big chunks of meat, though I've found that swapping that out for tofu and/or Yve's veggie ground round works just as well. I've been learning that the key to awesome chili is, well, chilies; I've got jalapeno and chipotles, but I wasn't able to get the poblanos I wanted. Poblanos are milder than jalapenos but not flavourless like bell peppers. The idea is to toss all the peppers, some onion, protein, a can of tomatos (I can never seem to find nice enough fresh tomatos to bother using fresh ones), tomato paste, and some dried beans into the crockpot and let it burble over night. I'm hoping the dried beans will mean that they'll still have structural integrity and not have turned to mush. Spice-wise, I've been using three kind of chili powder (regular, chipotle and ancho), some cocoa, salt and pepper. I'll prolly throw in a bay leaf or too for fun. The cocoa adds some nice depth, IME. If there's not enough liquid from the tomatos, I'll pour on a bottle of corona to pull out the alcohol soluble flavours.

Storm passed by Oakville completely. We haven't got a drop of rain here and the warnings have passed.

I was going to suggest Cape Breton, which has a similar climate (why else would so many Scots settle here?)

Well, April was extremely nice. But May and June remind me a bit more of January than anything spring or summer-like.
