In the night, the leopard-men came. Spotted and fearsome, they crept through the shadows, yellow eyes flashing lambent in the torchlight. They slit the throat of the night watch and drank their blood. They strode silently to the shores of the lagoon in the centre of the town, to the hut where the headsman lived.

As they raised their shining blades, something broke the surface of the water. A long, sinuous dragon arose from a pool far too shallow to conceal such a vast form.

"You were not truly so foolish as to believe that this town was undefended, were you?" growled the serpent. With a snarl, the water dragon dealt with the leopard-men, who died as silently as they had killed.
