Happy Robot Bees, Damnit!

Dr. Perusalmy held his breath as he hit the power switch. The tiny machines shifted on the table. As one, they buzzed and took flight. In accordance with the test program, they arranged themselves in a few simple patterns in the air, first. A square matrix, a series of cylinders. A honeycomb.

The bees then began to move around more chaotically as their individual behaviour logic took over. Avoid collision with nearby bees, monitor for communication dance patterns, look for blossoms to harvest for pollen. The lab had a variety of flowers set out (artificial - ten million dollars doesn't go as far as it used to). The bees started to dip towards the flowers, landing briefly before heading back to the central colony and dancing to communicate the food they found, or didn't find.
Just as Dr. Perusalmy began to smile, the bees' behaviour began to change. The bees began to back themselves into corners. The patterns of their dancing changed. Finally, a few of the bees flew to the ceiling and disengaged their wings, falling to the ground and breaking with a tiny pop.

"Ah! No!" shouted Dr. Kwon, the project head, from the doorway. "We need happy robot bees, damnit!"

Dr. Perusalmy sighed and went back to the drawing board.
