From Arref's blog ([livejournal.com profile] itsog), I found a link discussing different "types" of role-playing. Check it out here

For my own amusement, I was wondering how the people I game with see themselves; this might also help me as a GM decide how to drive my games. I know [livejournal.com profile] night__watch, for example, is a storyteller. I, on the other hand, am more of a method actor.

I picked three, though I'm a bit from every category.

I have played the "power gamer" and "butt kicker," though to a certain extent these are my own ways of managing a character who is himself that sort of thing -- a Kalivor, or a B from Pez's In Nomine game -- characters who are (at least at the start of the game, if not all the way through) more concerned with being tough or accumulating power. I wouldn't call it my style of play, but I can and do play that style when it seems called for, or in character. I didn't pick these, since I feel that these things are met by other categories.

I am not "The Specialist", as far as I'm aware. I may be in spurts -- having a character idea, and trying to pull it off in mulitple genres at the same time, usually subconsciously.

I would consider myself a "Casual Gamer," but don't really fit what the link describes it as. I don't like to play all the time, and certainly am not some sort of hardcore gamer, but my characters don't stay in the background well.

Tactician - I am, absolutely. Though I'm not a military buff, or anything. I just like that kind of stuff ... "challenging logical obstacles" ... though in the end, I don't make decisions that would be out of character. I can get frustrated by other players making tactically unsound, but in-character decisions. Meh. I get over it fast.

The Method Actor and Storyteller - What I am, mostly. I try to be the Storyteller most of the time, but get easily wrapped up in my characters, and feel like I've cheated myself if I make an out of character decision to satisfy my Tactician or Storyteller qualities. Above all, I'm probably a Method Actor with a Tactician vein. But it's the plot threads that develop that keep me the most interested, which is a Storyteller thing.

Am I all of the above? Or none of them? Hmph.

See, I'm a "power gamer," where "power" is defined as "knowledge." I love to play characters who know things, ideally more than the other PCs. This also, to an extent, falls under the heading of "Specialist." I'm more than willing to overthrow my characters motivation for the sake of the story, but otherwise knowing my character and what makes him tick is important to me.
