I've been obsessing over the different lyrics, and I think I prefer the live Cohen over the album version. I should decide if I'm going to cough up the cash to see him live when he's here... soon, if there are still tickets available.
Honestly, I think Cohen's biggest drawback, especially in the 80s, was his synthesizer. The lyrics are golden, but the backing music is a little bit... well, Cohen wrote a lot of it in his room on a keyboard, and it sounds like it. I like his voice, and I love his words, but he's better with a backing band.
But love is not a victory march - it's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah.
That song is so beautiful, tragic and melancholy but beautiful. I agree love is not a victory march for only in the occasional relenting is the taste the sweetest.
