Ramble

I went out today and bought pretty much everything that I need for my Halloween costumes. I need to do a little sewing to make the Batman cape and cowl, but I have enough fabric leftover from previous costumes and unmade projects that I got to avoid fabricland this year.

I am also becoming a little unsettled by the changes in sizing in mens' clothing. I'm starting to have a hard time finding pants that fit - when I was 18, it seemed that most pants were sized "square" - the waist and inseam the same size, or close to that. Now that I'm back in that size range, the pants with the right waist size seem to assume that I'm about 5' 0". Also, some (but not all) manufacturers have redefined "large" so that, even though my torso is much bigger than it was when I was 18, I'm now wearing a medium.

I give into my yuppie urges today and bought a couple space aged exercise shirts - one with crazy warming fibres (seems to be warmed than my wool sweater), and another with crazy moisture dispersing fibres. Both include thumbholes stitched into the sleeves, which makes me absurdly happy. They also look like surperhero outfits, which doesn't hurt either.

On the downside, the apartment is in a mess, my network is broken and I didn't make it to the grocery store, so I have no food that I want to eat. I do need to eat something, though, before I go out to dance all night at DarkRave. I also didn't get laundry done, because there was a significant lineup in the laundry room when I went down, likely caused by one of the machines being broken. It looks like the broken machine flooded at least part of that floor.

Clothing manufacturers do that over time; it's to accomodate the egos and body-image issues of the age. People, as a general rule, have gotten a lot fatter; as a result, measurements change to reflect a low number with a "standard desirability".

Marilyn Monroe's size was a 12, back in the day. But, ah, according to measurements, in todays's standards, she wore about a six.**

Dunno what to tell you about finding pants that fit, though. Shop around? Once you find a brand that fits you well, buy 'em out?

**NB: I don't have a citation for this, but I've heard both statistics thrown around pretty regularly, and it does seem to hold true - older clothing does have a larger size number for their measurements.

Gonna assume you ended up buying groceries because I TOTALLY saw you walking to the store. :D Didn't say "hi" for some mysterious reason probably deeply rooted in social anxiety and the need to concentrate on not dropping the cereal.

(Creepy: I just heard a crash and said cereal had flung itself off the counter onto the kitchen floor! It doesn't like being blamed, apparently.)

Nope - I had a can of chili. I went out, though, to go to the club at 10pm, and went in through the entrance by Loblaws, so maybe that was when you saw me?

That makes sense... so you were going clubbing and we were coming home to watch Battlestar Galactica after a thrilling Saturday evening's grocery-shop.

I agree that it's strange. There are two things, in particular, that I've noticed:

1. I'm now a size small. Apparently "average height and in decent shape" is small, now.
2. I have to buy jeans from the GAP. They seem to be the only people who make jeans that fit my waist and accomodate my "fencer quads" without making me feel like I'm wearing tents on my legs.

I don't get it.
