I recall some other killer-bat movie from a while back, where the climactic scene is a bonfire in the cave, with flaming bats flying everywhichaway, like insane fireflies. I seem to recall it being pretty bad, too.
heh, yet another reason that flamethrowers should be standard in any bat-horror-movie character's inventory.
In general, bat movies are not scary at all because bats are cute little fuzzy things. how mean could they be? (as long as you don't drop them in water, or feed them after midnight, or...)
These guys even had a flamethrower. But the dropped it when the bats came, because, well, otherwise it wouldn't be scary. And these were genetically engineered Super Bats! So they could chew through steel and stuff. But for some reason, they didn't flap thier wings or move very much.
I dunno, I said "hollywood" horror... Bats was meant to be a blockbuster, big deal kind of film, or at least was marketed as such. It was worse than highlander endgame. By far. While there are worse horror movies, this one was a "big hollywood production", and so should have had at least half decent special effects, instead of paper cut out bats. This was a step above a student film, but without any of the charm. It's like a Roger Corman movie, but worse, because it should know better.
OK ... maybe I've just been insulated by all the stuff that I'm used to watching. Bats really didn't seem all that bad, and was certainly more watchable than Highlander: Endgame.
Of course, Beyond Reanimator is in production, and should be released upon an unsuspecting public sometime next year, so Bats might not hold your top spot for long ...

But, seriously, if you're going to have bats as the scary monsters, having a bunch of paper outlines of bats taped to a fence is not scary!
But then we found Beetlejuice on tv, and all was well.

Anyone who is over on a semi-regular basis to watch the movies that the Wiff likes to rent can confirm this ...
Besides, there's always the latest Highlander movie, whatever it was called.
