There's another music video shoot this Saturday starting at 2 at Hart House. They are looking for a lot of people so they can get a crowd scene. I'm probably going to go to this one. If you happen to be interested, but don't have anything you think is appropriate, I have stuff I can lend out (including stuff for people a bit bigger or smaller than me)

The Wet Spots are playing tonight at Cameron House, doors open at 10. They make funny music about kink and poly situations. I plan to be there; what about you?
Two upcoming events labelled as "neovictorian" or "steampunk" in Toronto (they're related, but still).

Anyone interested? [livejournal.com profile] zingerella, I figure at least the clothing part might catch your interest. I'm trying to decide if I want to go to either.

The links:
A music video shoot asking for extras with steampunk/neovictorian outfits. I really hope it's not 30+ C on the weekend, or they will be more steamed than steampunk.

NeoVitorian Nightmares, a club event with live bands (Android Lust!), a reading, and a fashion show.

I am tempted by both, and could be convinced to going if I had company.

Upcoming events:

Aug 25th: A Night of Jolly Rogering at the Pirate Festival, Old Fort York. My plan is go to late in the afternoon to hit the normal pirate fest stuff, then hang around for the booze-soaked dirty comedy afterwards.

Sept 4th: Concert at Funhaus, including Ayria and Combichrist, and other bands that I am less interested in. Tempted, but wary of Tuesday night concerts with 4 bands.

Sept 5th: the Birthday Massacre playing at the Mod Club. Also tempted, and also wary of a Wednesday night concert.

I don't know if I'm too old to make two mid-week concerts these days. Anyone interested in joining me for any of these?

Tonight, I went to see the Mudmen, hard rocking bagpipe music. The doors were originally scheduled to open at 8, with the show starting at 9. At 8, we were told the doors would open at 10. The band did not play until 12. They played 4 songs. Good, but short. I wanted to buy CDs, but none were for sale, despite the (empty) merch table - I have been trying to restrict my music buying to shows where the band gets a better cut.

The show, sadly, was at the Rebuplik, on Richmond near John.

Phrases uttered (by me) during the course of the night;

"you must be at least this tall to rawk", indicating my nipples - most attendees would therefore not be permitted to rawk.
"I have sperm older than you"
"I have had pubic hair longer than you have been alive"

Some kid tried to pick me up with the line "do you have an accent?"

...

Seriously. I am too old for this shit. I spent a lot of time scowling.

[livejournal.com profile] olletho, you and B. dodged a bullet.

When a mosh pit appeared, I, who while overweight does not qualify by most people's definitions of "large", outmassed any three other mosh pit people.

A sad, sad showing. I was the only audience member in a kilt. Shame, Toronto, shame.

Video card still working.

My phone's antenna tried to escape, but I found it before the club got too busy.

[livejournal.com profile] neeuqdrazil made us an awesome dinner - I so owe her for the amount of work she;s been doing at homer lately.

The concert was great. Bella Morte are fantastic live! Delica were a pleasant surprise, and I was amused by Perdition's random attack by Asian Schoolgirls.

It has been a good evening, a pleasant ending to what had been a somewhat crappy weekend. Now, to bed - 6am is going to feel like a fist in my face.

Yet another top five.

What are your top five psytrance artists/album/tracks? I'm looking to broaden my music collection a bit, and I want more bleep and/or bloop.

My review, in very brief - [livejournal.com profile] sylvarthorne was right - I should have gone to the Covenant/Rotersand/SomeoneElse show instead. I would likely have had more fun, though perhaps gotten less sleep.

It has been a weekend with many good things in it, but not, on the whole, a good weekend. Primarily because timing has been pretty crappy throughout, and things never quite went how I would have liked them to, though no fault of the various people I was privileged enough to spend time with.

The good things;

  • A lovely evening with the fantastic [livejournal.com profile] not_matt

  • A lovely evening with another fantastic person.

  • Seeing Fearless, which I quite enjoyed.

  • Seeing Anchorman, which I did not expect to enjoy, but did.

Tomorrow night is Ladytron at the Guvernment. Bleep Bloop!

Also, Happy Birthdays to [livejournal.com profile] hippybngstockng and [livejournal.com profile] princesspoopy! Also to [livejournal.com profile] themusesbitch in one hour! I have been really bad about my birthday posting.
Time for another top five.

I don't have a lot of classical music in my collection, mainly because I'm picky about music. Specifically, I tend to pick out music I like by mood, and most classical pieces wander from mood to mood (sad -> angry ->inspirational etc.)

So, if you would, gentle readers, give me your five saddest pieces of "classical" music.

Shows I am planning to go see in the next while;

Ayria @ Savage Garden, Fri Sept 1
Ladytron @ The Guvernment, Tues Oct 2
Oktotenfest, with Bella Morte and several bands who are not Bella Morte @
Funhaus, Sun Oct 15

I've got my ticket for Ladytron already, since its the one I think is most
likely to sell out. [livejournal.com profile] corwin77 and [livejournal.com profile] neeuqdrazil you've
both told me that you really liked what you've heard from Ladytron, even if you
don't recall the band's name. Amusingly, this show was originally scheduled for
the Docks. I am becoming convinced that I will never need to know how to get to
the Docks, since every show I want to see there gets moved.

Everyone else, wanna come keep me company at any or all of these shows?

On the Funhaus event list, of particular interest to [livejournal.com profile] corwin77:

April 13 - EBM Thursdays - Friday is a holiday so come out to what will be an amazing night of great music. The Birthday Massacre (live)

I am thinking I should go.
I am tone deaf, and have no rhythm.

I have noticed, when singing along with music, that sometimes I feel a sort of buzzing in my throat and chest. I've been wondering if that's happening because I'm actually hitting the same note as the singer, or if it's because I'm very badly off key. Because I am tone deaf, I can't tell! A third option may be that I have triggered the latent death bomb buried in my chest cavity, and am going to explode.

The Dresden Dolls were amazing last night. The little shows between acts were a pleasant surprise - I hadn't been expecting it. Definitely a hell of a lot better than the normal boring music that doesn't sound at all like the bands playing that one normally gets between acts.

The show opened with Fawn Fable. Not quite my music, but still enjoyable - at first I'd been expecting a sort of generic "angsty chick with acoustic guitar" type thing, but she had a lot of energy in her songs, and got me moving.

Next up was Devotchka (which I probably misspelled). I didn't like them at first - I found the vocals a little too "U2" for my tastes. I was won over, though, by their exceptional skills - they were technically very good (as far as I can tell with my musical retardation). Instruments featured included guitars, accordion, drums, violin and trumpet. There were only three band members, and there was much swapping of instruments. Once they pulled out the violin, I was caught, and was swaying away.

The Dolls themselves had me jumping and grinning. All in all, I count this as a successful night.

It's been a while, so I spent some time today going through Ishkur's guide to Electronic Music today. If you like things that beep, take a look.

For those of you who I owe mix CDs - if something on there inspires you, let me know - I may have it. Most of my electronic stuff, though, falls in the big red "industrial" balloon on the trance page.

The topic of genres also comes up in a problem I have - a lot of the genre categories on my music suck to the point of uselessness (and in itunes, come across as "0" "35" etc. - these are from winamp genres). What I need is a better guide for genres - what genre, for example, do I put Leonard Cohen or Bjork in? LC has done a lot of stuff over the years. For the electronic stuff I've been poking away at Ishkur's guide and using that. I know of nothing that really covers other kinds of music though. CDDB, freedb and musicbrainz don't tend to have useful genre info (which is how I got in this mess in the first place). Anyone have any ideas?
