Dear LazyWeb,

Having long since surrendered and moved my music into iTunes, I find myself with several itunes related questions.

  1. iTunes tracks are now DRM-free, which is great. However, I have a number of older tracks that still have DRM on them. Is there an easy way to strip the DRM off the files, or am I going to have to do it the hard way? (convert to mp3, or burn to audio CD and re-rip, etc.)

  2. Is there an easy way to share an iTunes database across machines? I have itunes on my desktop,, where I sync my ipod, but I also want to be able to use the same itunes DB on my laptop, since the laptop outputs to the TV in HD and the desktop does not, and I love having pretty visualizations on the TV, especially while crafting or for parties. It seems like the sort of thing that one ought to be able to do. I know I can just copy the DB files across, but I don't want top have to do that every time I want to listen to music on the laptop. Complicating matters slightly is that the actual music files sit on a third machine, my linux server, acessible to both machines via a mapped drive.

Here is my sad situation.

I have four machines in the back room.

Velvet, the old linux server.
Phoenix, the new linux server.
Gir, my windows desktop.
Shiny, Lizard's laptop.

Gir and Shiny can talk to each other with no trouble. Velvet and Phoenix can talk to each other with no trouble. Phoenix can connect to Gir with no trouble. But when Gir or Shiny connect to Phoenix, they are fine for a little while, but if we do anythign intensive like playing mp3s off of samba shares on Phoenix, or tranferring large files, Phoenix cuts them off. Completely. Not just samba shares - all TCP/IP connections (ssh, etc.) are cut off, and Phoenix won't talk to those boxes for a minute or so after they get cut off. This means that the server I bought to hold large amounts of data won't share that data with my windows machines. No idea why. I tried upgrading to a new gigabit switch (phoenix and gir have gigabit cards), and I don't think it's network cabling, since the window -> velvet connections and the velvet <-> phoenix connections are solid (stay connected for weeks, etc.)

I've checked the process monitor on Gir, and I'm not seeing a huge spike in CPU usage or network usage before the cut offs. I played around with Samba settings to make sure Phoenix, not one of the windows machines, is the master browser for the workgroup.

I'm running out of ideas, here. Anyone have any idea what could be causing this?

I'm looking for recommendations for tattoo artists in Southern Ontario. My ideal artist would be Leah Miller (did my right shoulder), who isn't working right now. I'm considering going to Daemon Rowanchilde (did the left shoulder), but I have reservations about the cost and the distance I'd have to travel to get stuff done by him, particularly since I have the next few designs pretty solidly worked out (I've given some thought to having him do some freehand "energywave" stuff later, once I get all my ideas onto my skin). So, aside from those two worthies, does anyone have someone they like? In Toronto would be better, since I don't know that I'd want to have a long drive with a big fresh tattoo on my back and a system of endorphins, but if the artist is good enough, I'd consider it.

I seem to recall that a few people have looked into online food trackers to keep track of calories, nutrients, etc. - does anyone care to recommend one? Some, thing that'll also track exercise would be even better.

More than one person has posted poetry today, and I seem to be in a mood for it.

So, recommend poetry to me. Who's your favourite poet? What should I read that I haven't?

(My favourite, by the by, is Yeats.)

Alternatively, write me a poem! I'll save you from having to read any of mine, though.

Question for the LazyWeb: I'm updating [livejournal.com profile] mrdeth, and in playing with the styles, I can't figure out how to get customized (i.e., matching the main journal style) comment pages turned on. I know that the styles I'm playing with have customised comment pages because I have seen them on other peoples' journals. Is this something only paid journals get, or is there a setting I'm missing somewhere?

Leaves!

I am making masks out of tree bark collected from dead wood. For one of the masks, I thought it would look nice to add leaves to it for a sort of Green Man look. I am trying to maintain a plausible periodicity to the project - that is, I'm not using anything that would be completely unobtainable to a relatively primitive tech level, but I'm willing to cheat and update the technique - so, since glue can be made pretty easily, I am using glue, but I'm willing to use epoxy and modern carpenter's glue.

I'm looking for a way to preserve some green leaves to attach them to the mask, so that they won't crumble from drying out as they would if I left them untreated. [livejournal.com profile] neeuqdrazil has suggested wax, which might work (ironing between wax paper sheets, for example), but I am curious to find out what other people think of as possible methods. And so I turn again to you, LazyWeb, for your advice.

So, my cell phone sucks. I got a minimal feature phone when I signed up a couple years ago, and it is in need to replacing. If I get another minimal phone, and sign up for another contract, I could probably get the phone for free.

However... gadget lust rears its ugly head. I am pondering getting a fancy phone. Maybe something with a camera in it. Or one of those phones that is also a palm pilot, since I do not have a PDA. I'm not too worried about the initial cost of the phone, but I'm concerned about how much the extra features I wuold need to support a fancy phone would cost.

So, I ask you, LazyWeb, for reccomendations for fancy phones that will work in Canada. I know nothing of these phones beyond what I have said above. What should I be looking for? Is there a significant difference between phone companies for these things?

I might still go for something boring. But I at least wanna go drool over the shinies.
