You're after my robot bee!

Harvard got a $10 million grant to build a colony of robot bees. Sure, they're resistant tot he beepocalypse. But consider what happens when someone gets thr bright idea to start putting cameras on them. Are you prepared?

Marvel fails, again.

"Sexy" Halloween costumes. That look nothing like the charcater's outfits at all. One of them is for a character that doesn't exist. Well, okay, the Emma Frost one is pretty accurate.

Five Comic Book Costumes for Women that Won't Turn You Into a Sex Object

Also includes five costumes for men that *will* get you objectified.

Murder in Toronto

Ryerson prof looks at homicide rates in different neighbourhoods, and looks at how they are similar, and then looks at neighbourhoods with similar characteristics but lower homicide rates. One theory is that tall appartment buildings are to blame, because they diminish the sense of community.

NHS Behind the Headlines

The UK's NHS gets into the science behind popular news stories.

Behind the Headlines on BPA

As an example - what the most recent study on BPA plastics actually says. In brief - it establishes that drinking from BPA bottles increases BPA in your body. There isn't much in the way of research explaining exactly what that does to a person. Which isn't to say that it's proven safe, just that isn't hasn't been proven harmful, either.

Moral panic about teenagers hugging. Even guys! Danger! 3 second hug limit instituted.

E is not the drug that destroys your brain, Speed is

An old article about the much touted study claiming that MDMA destroys the brain. Apparently the study was done with meth instead of E. OTOH, after some looking I did find more recent studies linking E to long term sleep pattern disruption and depression.

Cola destroys muscles!

I wonder what the Behind the Headlines site has on this? Anyway, according the the Beeb, "Excessive cola consumption can lead to anything from mild weakness to profound muscle paralysis".

How did I miss hearing about this?

I wish we had a viable alternative to the current gov't so we could just have an election and get rid of Harper already.
So, I have been starting to accumulate stuff for a Mad Scientist costume of Hallowe'en (or, you know, whenever mad science calls). I have a pretty clear picture in my mind how I want the outfit to look.

Then, yesterday, I realise that Dr. Steel has already got the exact outfit I was working on, right down to the pair of boots I had in mind for it.

I am amused.

In other costumy news, my second set of goggles is done. Parts of them glow in the dark. The respirator paint job still needs some work, but since I wasn't planning to take that to Dark Rave Saturday, I'm okay with that.
